The Way of Thanksgiving

“There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the LORD your God has blessed you.” Deuteronomy 12:7 NIV

Long before Thanksgiving Day was proclaimed a national holiday in 1941, God had ordained a thank offering as a means of worship for His people.

Among the many things for which people of the Old Testament were exhorted to give thanks, “His love endures forever” is one of the most oft mentioned and repeated reasons for thanksgiving.

Scripture also encourages thanking God for salvation, His goodness, His unfailing love, wonderful deeds, righteousness, and for being our strength and our shield.

The thanksgiving “way” is the daily “thanks living” of our lives in response to God’s love in sending Jesus Christ to die that we might live, and to show us how to live life to the fullest in Him.

One day is not enough time to count all of the physical, material, relational and spiritual blessings of our past, present, and future lives.

Our Lord realized the importance of giving thanks. Before the feeding of the 5,000, at the last supper before partaking of both the bread and the wine, and for God answering His prayer for raising Lazarus as they took away the stone, Jesus gave thanks to the Father.

Thanksgiving is a holiday for the heart. May Thanksgiving Day be just one of 365 opportunities for living the thanksgiving way as we grow into the fullness of Christ.
Father, thank You! In Jesus’ name, Amen
